Playing with Style: Over half of golfers spend more time picking out their outfit than picking out their clubs

Our key takeaways:

  • Three quarters (74%) of golfers like to look good when playing golf
  • For 71% the clothes they wear when playing golf are important to them
  • Over half (52%) spend more time picking their golf outfit than they did picking their golf clubs

Over the past decade, golf fashion has undergone a significant transformation, shedding its traditionally conservative image in favour of a more modern, performance-driven aesthetic. While traditional golf wear still holds its place, today’s golf apparel blends athletic functionality with contemporary style and this is reflected in consumer sentiment.

Three quarters (75%) of golfers prefer to wear the modern style of golf clothes rather than the older style of golf attire, increasing to 82% of women golfers. Furthermore, over two thirds (69%) take a lot of care when picking their golf outfit, increasing to 80% of younger golfers aged 18-34.

Overall, 74% of golfers like to look good while playing golf, and just over half (52%) spend more time picking their golf outfit and shoes than they do picking their golf clubs, increasing to 69% of golfers aged 18-34.

These insights highlight just how much fashion now matters to golfers, particularly among younger players and women. No longer just a matter of function or tradition, golf attire has become a key expression of personal style and identity on the course. As the sport continues to evolve, so too does its dress code—proving that in modern golf, looking the part is as important as playing it.
