What do people think of the new X Factor?

When X Factor returned to our screens last Saturday the response from the public was relatively muted. Of those who watch the X Factor, only 15% rated the first episode as excellent, while one in five (19%) branded it awful. Unsurprisingly, older viewers were far less favourable than younger viewers, with almost double the number of 18-34s giving the show a positive rating than those aged 55 and over (47% to 25%).

Whatever they thought, 58% of those that watched the first episode say they were likely to continue watching the series. Women were far more likely than men to keep tuning in (67% to 48%).

But if ITV wanted to keep the disappointed viewers tuning in, the return of Simon Cowell would probably have little effect. Only 1 in 7 (15%) of those unlikely to keep watching said that the ex-judge?s return would make them want to see the rest of the series.

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,003 UK adults aged 18+ from 3rd to 5th of September 2013. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
