Opinium Politico polling: Regulation of cryptocurrencies
Find the full data tables here.
New polling by Opinium for Politico shows the UK public is split on how cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin should be handled by regulators, with no single approach commanding majority support.
The most common view is that cryptocurrencies should be regulated in the same way as traditional investments like shares or bonds (27%), suggesting an appetite for equal consumer protections. However, a significant proportion of the public favours tougher action: 18% say crypto should be more strictly regulated than other investments, while 22% believe it should be banned altogether.
Only a small minority (7%) think cryptocurrencies should be regulated, but less strictly than traditional financial products. Meanwhile, 6% say none of these options reflect their view, and 20% remain unsure.
Overall, the findings highlight considerable uncertainty and division among the public, with nearly half either unsure or supporting outright bans—underscoring the challenge facing policymakers as they consider bringing crypto under formal UK regulatory frameworks.
