Recent polling highlights a public increasingly attuned to global economic risks, with geopolitical instability standing out as the dominant concern.

Over half the public (51%) believe that war in the Middle East is the most likely cause of a global financial crisis within the next five years. This places geopolitical instability far ahead of any other potential trigger.

By contrast, economic and financial system risks register much lower levels of concern. Just 10% point to a potential bubble or crash in AI-related companies, while only small proportions cite issues in the banking sector (4%), private credit (4%), or the property market (3%).

Opinium conducted a nationally and politically representative survey of 2,015 UK adults between 15th and 17th April 2026.
