One in ten Brits see wine/beer as a daily essential

  • Less than one in 10 Brits don?t try to budget when buying groceries (7%)
  • A fifth of Britons, who budget when buying groceries, go over their budget to buy a ?luxury? good when they need to cheer themselves up (22%)
  • One in ten Brits claim wine or beer (9%), crisps (9%) and chocolate (11%) are a daily essential

As household finances continue to be squeezed in line with the bleak UK economy, Opinium Research has found that Brits are doing their best to tighten purse strings on trips to the supermarket.

Opinium Research discovered that three in five Brits who budget on groceries, go over their grocery budget to purchase luxury items when there is a special occasion (59%), such as a birthday or Christmas. Three in ten women indulge themselves when they need cheering up (29%), while a third of men just like to treat themselves once in a while (32%).

Opinium Research also asked Brits what they consider to be daily essentials, rather than luxury treats, and found that one in ten Britons count wine or beer (9%), crisps (9%) and chocolate (11%) as daily necessities. Some of the top ?luxury? treats for the nation include steak (51%), specialty cheese such as Brie or Camembert (39%) and salmon (29%).

Kate Norfolk, head of healthcare research at Opinium, commented: ?Times have been tough for a while now and consumers are no doubt fed up of constantly pinching the pennies. Although it is not a good idea to live beyond your means and buy expensive products that you can?t afford, we agree with the overwhelming majority of Brits who believe that life is too short not to treat yourself once in a while (87%).?

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,012 UK adults (1,847 of those who budget when purchasing groceries) from 14th to 16th August 2012, aged 18+. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
