EVENT & REPORT: Dead centre? A review of the political landscape after the referendum

A year ago, after the general election result, many people felt confident that the Conservatives would govern from the centre. The early impetus for the Northern Powerhouse and the introduction of the National Living Wage reinforced that narrative.

Since then, David Cameron and George Osborne have departed, leading figures from the Leave campaign have come into senior Cabinet roles and Theresa May, best known as Home Secretary for new restrictions on immigration and wanting to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights, has become Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters have taken Labour off to the left, despite the best efforts of many in the parliamentary party.

Is the road to the centre in politics now closed? Do these changes in politics reflect the attitudes of voters or is the polarisation in politics at odds with their views?

Join Opinium,†the SMF†and a panel of senior politicians as they draw on new research to examine the state of British politics after the referendum.
