London Mayoral Election 2028
New polling from Opinium, conducted on behalf of the Festus Akinbusoye campaign, explores Londoners’ attitudes ahead of the 2028 mayoral election, including voting intention, the issues facing the capital and the characteristics voters are looking for in the next Mayor.
Among those expressing a voting preference, Labour leads on 32%, followed by the Greens on 18%, with both the Conservatives and Reform UK on 17%. The research suggests a Conservative candidate from outside the political establishment could have particular appeal: 37% of Londoners say having previously run a successful business would make them more likely to vote for a Conservative candidate, while 38% say the same of a candidate who is a fresh face outside the political establishment. Experience tackling crime and policing has particularly strong appeal, making 52% more likely to back the Conservative candidate.
The polling also highlights dissatisfaction with the direction of the capital. Half of Londoners (51%) believe London is heading in the wrong direction, compared with 34% who think it is heading in the right direction. The cost of living is most commonly identified as one of London’s most important issues (51%), followed by crime and policing (36%), health and NHS services (31%) and housing (30%).

Research methodology
Opinium conducted an online survey on behalf of Festus Akinbusoye campaign amongst 2,021 London adults aged 18+ between 10th and 17th July 2026. Results were weighted to be representative of the adult population of London.
