Khan leads Goldsmith in the race for London Mayor

After ten years of Boris Johnson in City Hall, it looks like London might lean back in the direction of the Labour mayoral candidate with Sadiq Khan coming top in the first Opinium Evening Standard opinion poll. Once second preference voters are counted it shows that the Labour candidate is on 55%, while Zac Goldsmith falls behind on 45%.Mr Goldsmith does retain a slight lead amongst voters aged 55 and above (52% vs 48% for Sadiq Khan), but Mr Khan is well ahead amongst all other age groups. The question remains whether the Conservative ‘ring’ in the suburbs will be enough to keep Zac Goldsmith’s chances alive, with our poll showing he is on 49% of the vote in Outer London but only 40% in Inner London.Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 1,011 London adults aged 18+ from 2nd to 7th March 2016. Results have been weighted to representative criteria to fit the profile of all London adults.
