Drivers skeptical of latest changes
Four in five (78%) motorists were not aware of any government plans to transfer the management of main roads in England (such as the M25 and A1) to a private company. When we asked British drivers about some of the other potential changes hinted at for the future of British roads, especially regards toll roads, some reactions were showed quite negative responses. Just under two thirds (64%) said having to pay tolls to use main roads would affect their standard of living, while 77% would change their journey onto roads where tolls were not charged.
When we asked about who drivers would most be inclined to trust to represent their interests, 67% said an independent motorists? group. By comparison, only 26% would be inclined to trust a railways passengers? group expanding to represent motorists as well, with 30% inclined not to.
Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,003 UK adults aged 18+ from 15th to 17th July 2014. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria. Included in this was a sample of 1,537 British drivers.
