  • Two thirds (63 per cent) of Brits support the eviction of Dale Farm residents
  • Half (50 per cent) of Brits would consider moving if their council approved a legal travellers site near their home
  • Younger generation most sympathetic towards needs

The majority (63 per cent) of Brits support the eviction of the travellers from the illegal plots, with 41 per cent strongly supporting. The older generation (55 years old and over) are the biggest advocates with 70 per cent wanting them to move on compared to half (52 per cent) of 18 ? 34 year olds.

Traveller support

In regards to making travellers feel part of the community, public opinion isn?t strongly in favour of their needs as when asked, only two fifths (41 per cent) agreed that councils should make more land available to accommodate travellers in their community. As well as this, one quarter (25%) would support UK planning laws to be relaxed in order to better accommodate travellers, with the younger generation (29 per cent) once again leading from the front with their support.

When thinking about their local council approving a legal travellers site near to their home, half (50 per cent) of Brits are likely to consider moving.

Media Portrayal

Asked for their opinions regarding the way travelers are portrayed in the media, 35% feel the traveler community is fairly portrayed, a quarter (26%) feel the media is biased against travelers. Conversely 17% feel the media is biased in their favour.

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,017 UK adults aged 18+ from 21st to 23rd September 2011. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
