Voting Intention – 7th August

Despite the success of the British Olympic team there’s been little sign of any “rally round the flag” effect for the government with Labour still 9 points ahead of the Tories, 40% to 31%, while the Lib Dems will be relieved to be back into double figures on 10% but concerned about being only a few respondents ahead of UKIP who are also on 10%.
- Approval ratings for the three main party leaders remain largely unchanged with David Cameron’s approval figures increasing slightly to 33% while his disapproval declines to 50% giving him a net rating of -17%, his best since April
- Labour leader Ed Miliband has an approval figure of 25% while 40% disapprove, giving him a net rating of -15%, still just ahead of the Prime Minister but, again, the closest that this gap has been since he overtook David Cameron in May
- Nick Clegg’s net approval rating remains at 14% while 60% disapprove giving him a net rating of -46%

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 1,960 GB adults aged 18+ from 7th to 9th August 2012. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
Interview Method and Sample
This survey is conducted online by CAWI (computer aided web interviewing), using Opinium?s online research panel of circa 30,000 individuals. This research is run from a representative sample of GB adults (aged 18+ in England, Scotland and Wales). The sample is scientifically defined from pre-collected registration data containing gender, age (18-34, 35-54, and 55+), region (North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West, Wales, and Scotland), working status and social grade to match the latest published ONS figures.
Opinium also takes into account differential response rates from the different demographic groups, to ensure the sample is representative.
