My Opinium: Hear from our lovely interns

Opinium is a fast-paced, exciting place to work and because of this we’re always looking for enthusiastic interns to join the team and get stuck in.

We don’t mess about – you’ll get so much out of the experience. But don’t take our word for it. We’ve asked our current heroic interns a few questions about their internship:

David Johnson – Heroic Summer Intern 2017

1. Describe Opinium in 3 words?

Ambitious, friendly, dedicated.

2. What is it like being an intern at Opinium?

It?s a great place to explore the business world. Being an intern at Opinium has exposed me to a range of industry areas due to the wide variety of research that is conducted here. I have been involved in projects exploring the realms of financial services, entertainment and leisure, and technology, among others. The team are encouraging and have thoroughly involved me across the lifecycle of projects, from discussing with colleagues how to frame questions, to exporting and analysing data, through to reporting. My IT, analytical and creative skills have been stretched as a result. I have been given the opportunity to work with many different colleagues, with a variety of expertise, including senior members of staff, which has enabled me to learn from their experience and direction. The team radiate a conscientious and also fun working attitude. They are friendly and up for a laugh as well, making it a really pleasant working environment. The many social events have also helped to get to know the staff and feel part of the team.

3. What has been your biggest challenge and biggest success during your internship at Opinium?

The work is fast paced and there can often be quick turnarounds; this is encouraging me to learn how to manage multiple deadlines and work in collaboration to get the job done. The team has been trusting in giving me responsibilities but also supportive in helping me handle my workload. There is a sense of achievement when a project that I have been involved with finishes and I can see that I have been able to help my colleagues in delivering for the client.

4. What’s your favourite skill that you’ve learnt through your internship at Opinium?

I particularly enjoy the reporting at Opinium and I’m learning how to communicate the findings in a clear and engaging way. I have enjoyed the challenge to seek out the story in the statistics, whether to help a PR agency create a compelling press release or to provide useful insight for a client looking to advance their business.

5. What advice would you give others who are looking at applying for an internship?

Find out when the next applications are and apply. Opinium have great, structured training and immerse you in the business to really open your eyes to the market research arena, and the workplace more generally. This internship is accessible and valuable: they will pay you enough to actually live on in London and help you learn how consumers think and how businesses work.

Faye Gibbons– Heroic Summer Intern 2017

1. Describe Opinium in 3 words?

Innovative, fun, hard-working

2. What is it like being an intern at Opinium?

Being an intern at Opinium is challenging but it’s also really rewarding. You’re thrown in at the deep end and very quickly involved in lots of different projects (from start to finish) but everyone’s so supportive and keen to help you just end up learning really quickly. The turn-around for projects is so quick which means you’re never bored and there’s always something new and exciting coming along.

3. What has been your biggest challenge and biggest success during your internship at Opinium?

My biggest challenge almost became my greatest success while at Opinium. With only a small amount of research experience previously, everything when I first joined Opinium was fairly ?new? and I had to learn most skills from scratch. However, with everyone?s help I was able to learn quickly and confidently and I would say my biggest success is looking back to just a few months ago and thinking how far I?ve come in such a short amount of time.†

4. What’s your favourite skill that you’ve learnt through your internship at Opinium?

Organisation and time management. With the amount of projects speeding through Opinium each week it was really important for me to learn how to effectively organise my time to be as useful as possible to everyone else on the team.

5. What advice would you give others who are looking at applying for an internship?

Be ready to get involved. One of the most daunting things when coming to Opinium was the speed and quantity of projects going on at any one time. No matter what level of the company people are at, everyone chips in to help each other, and the more you throw yourself into it, the more you’ll learn.
