The reaction to the “Raise the Flag” movement
We’re committed to helping organisations stay ahead of the latest political, economic, and (of course) societal trends shaping the UK.
This summer, one issue captured more attention than almost any other: the Raise the Flag movement. Union Jacks — and especially St George’s flags — have been seen on lampposts, painted on roundabouts, and across social media feeds, sparking debate about identity, belonging, and community.
The research
As part of our work for Good Morning Britain, we conducted a nationally representative survey of 500 people from ethnic minority backgrounds across the UK. Our research explored:
- Personal experiences over the summer
- Perceptions of changing attitudes within the country
- Reactions to seeing flags and symbols associated with the movement
- Whether these symbols are viewed as positive, neutral, or negative
Our findings reveal a more nuanced picture than many might expect, challenging common assumptions as well as evidencing others, offering valuable context for anyone interested in public opinion, diversity, and community relations.
