The Need
Opinium has worked with The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) since 2016, to provide insight to aid the safeguarding of the aviation industry through the encouragement of safe and responsible drone usage.
Our Approach
We initially conducted a 3 phase Qualitative/Quantitative study, to understand motivations, behaviours, lifestyle and attitudes towards drone flying and responsibility, culminating in insight to support the development of the dronecode. Since 2016, we have run a yearly tracker to understand the shifting attitudes to and behaviours around drones and drone usage. The research is conducted amongst the UK public at large, and with drones users who are the key group with whom the CAA needs to primarily engage.

The Outcome
Our research has been integral to informing the CAA’s strategy around drone responsibility. The research has supported the interest of multiple stakeholders, such as airlines and airports across the UK, in safeguarding the future of the aviation industry.
